Learning that Comes with Age?

I turned 55 earlier this month. One of the things I've enjoyed about getting older has been that I don't worry as much about my mistakes as I used to when I was younger.

I still make as many -- or even more -- mistakes as I ever did, but I just don't worry about them as much. Instead, I let the victims of my mistakes do the worrying, for part of my getting older has been my learning how to properly delegate responsibility.

  1. I'm around the same age. I feel much smarter than ever, and that confidence allows me to never feel I have to defend myself. i just say: Well, yes, I'm human, I'm not perfect, I'm sure that thing is full of mistakes, but it only had to serve this and this purpose and for that it is adequate. You can add your own stuff if you like.

  2. Happy late birthday!

I feel the way you're describing here. I'm glad to know that the learning continues.

  3. I too turn 55 this month. It's a great age. So many things that would have bothered me 25 years ago, just don't matter anymore. Really they never did, I can just see that now.

  5. Maybe I'm too young :D !

But I don't believe in older - What I see is that those who have been around the sun more often than I (and also those who haven't been around it very often)appear to have less interest in what I've read referred to as 'the fuzzy cognitive middle ground' that passes for sanity. I think that the passage of time incentivises a shift from survival to living, and life is too sweet to waste on worry.

Fair play to you Mr Sunstone

'..the good are always the merry, save by an evil chance and the merry love the fiddle, and the merry love the dance...'

I think - live, laugh, dance and love. Monkeys to worry :)

  6. I'm about to turn 52. Coming to grips with the brevity of life tends to make one less concerned about mistakes and what people think about you in general, I think.

  8. Interesting thought. Define 'mistake.' Or rather, give a made-up example. Personally, I feel that life is less stressful as I get older because I've learned how to handle so many situations. If difficult situations come up, it's "been there, done that."

  9. I'm just a bit younger than you, but I understand the feeling you've described. I'm a lot mellower now than I was when I was younger, and now recognize that most of the stuff I thought was "really important" was nonsense. Too bad I didn't know that about 20 years ago.

  10. I like it. I turned 53 recently. Might as well start delegating responsibility now.
