  1. Yes. Now, do you think we usually intend and even engineer our leaps? Or does necessity push us over?

  2. In my case, Nance, it's almost always either necessity or chance -- and almost never foresight and intention. How about you?

  3. “Growth for the sake of growth is the ideology of the cancer cell.” - Edward Abbey

Personal growth is in very stark contrast to what money-obsessed types mean by the word.

  4. Excellent point, George! I think Abbey was spot on with his observation.

  5. Since I'm a Miller nut, he's the one author who's quotes come to mind spontaneously. Nance's question brought to mind this, from Miller's Capricorn:

"My adventures were always adventitious, always thrust on me, always endured rather than undertaken."

(OK, I didn't remember the full quote; I had to google Miller "my adventures" "adventitious")

  6. Jon, you might be happy to know -- if you don't already -- that Twinka Thiebaud has written a new book about Miller. What Doncha Know? About Henry Miller It was published earlier this year.

Her publicist has contacted me and I have agreed to review Twinka's book. I intend to post my review sometime this coming week.
